About The Montage Art of Winston Smith:

Since the 1970’s, Winston has been slashing and pasting his way onto album covers and into galleries and magazines. In 1978, his political shock piece, Idol (a “bowling trophy” Jesus nailed to a cross of US dollars) brazenly adorned the album In God We Trust, Inc. by the punk band DEAD KENNEDYS. That album, banned in England and condemned by the American religious right, landed Smith and DEAD KENNEDYS a permanent spot in the punk culture hall of shame. To this day, the DK logo that Winston designed for the band remains an international symbol of protest against authoritarianism and can be found tattooed onto arms and spray-painted onto urban walls around the world.

The visual left hooks that Winston began throwing into the underground punk scene in the 1970’s and 80’s are now impacting a much wider audience as his images routinely show up in such well known rags as THE NEW YORKER, SPIN, PLAYBOY, JUXTAPOZ, ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST, ATLANTIC MONTHLY, AMAZING STORIES, ROLLING STONE, RED HERRING, THE VILLAGE VOICE, UTNE READER and many others. Winstons album cover for GREEN DAY’s “Insomniac” brought his surrealism to a new generation of rockers who gave their thumbs-up by rating his cover one of the three top favorites in a1997 Rolling Stone Magazine survey.
